Big Win for 'Make in India' Defence: Indian Navy's New 'Submarine Hunter' Ship Magdala Launched in Kochi!

The Indian Navy just got stronger! A new, powerful "submarine hunter" ship named 'Magdala' (BY 528) was launched at the Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi on October 18, 2025. This is a huge moment for India's "Make in India" dream, as this advanced warship is over 80% indigenous (Made in India)!
A Proud Moment in Kochi
In a traditional naval ceremony, the ship was launched by Mrs. Renu Rajaram, yesterday. The event was watched by top officials, including Vice Admiral Rajaram Swaminathan, the Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition (CWP&A), along with senior members of the Indian Navy and CSL.
This is the sixth ship in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASW SWC). The entire series is proudly designed and built right here in India by CSL. The first ship of this series is expected to be delivered to the Navy by the end of October 2025.
What Makes 'Magdala' a Deadly Sub-Hunter?
This ship is not just any vessel; it's a specialised hunter. Its main jobs are:
- Finding and destroying enemy submarines (Anti-Submarine Warfare).
- Increasing underwater surveillance near our coasts.
- Laying mines to protect our waters.
To do this, 'Magdala' is packed with high-tech gear. It's fast and agile, powered by three diesel engine-driven waterjets.
But its real power lies in its 'ears' and 'teeth'.
- Super-Ears (Sensors): It has a special Hull Mounted Sonar and a Low Frequency Variable Depth Sonar (LFVDS) to listen for and find even the quietest submarines hiding deep underwater.
- Powerful 'Teeth' (Weapons): Once it finds a target, it can attack with state-of-the-art Torpedoes, Anti-Submarine Rockets, a NSG-30 Gun, and 12.7 mm SRCGs (Super Rapid Gun Mounts).
A Big Boost for Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The launch of 'Magdala' is more than just a new ship. It is a big milestone in the Indian Navy's journey towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
Having a ship with over 80% Indian-made parts, weapons, and sensors is a massive achievement. It shows that India can build its own world-class defence systems. These ships will give the Indian Navy a significant capability to protect our country's maritime interests, especially in the busy Indian Ocean Region.
