Trump's Health Under Scrutiny: What's the Real Story Behind His Bruised Hands?

Concerns over US President Donald Trump’s health are making headlines again after he was seen with a noticeable bruise on his hand. The White House has attributed the bruising to "frequent, forceful handshakes and the use of aspirin," while also citing an underlying condition, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). However, the public appearance and an official memo from the White House physician have done little to quell the online speculation. So, what exactly is CVI and how serious is it?

What is Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI)?

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a medical condition where the veins in the legs have trouble sending blood back to the heart. According to Dr. Mimmie Kwong, a vascular surgeon at UC Davis Health, this can cause blood to pool, leading to swelling, which is the most common symptom. Over time, this swelling can cause the skin to become thick, dry, and inflamed. In severe cases, it can result in unhealing wounds on the legs, and if left untreated, could even lead to amputations. Dr. Kwong also highlights that patients with CVI are at a higher risk of developing a deep vein clot, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

The White House's Stand

Amidst a flurry of online rumours and trending hashtags like "Where is Trump?" and "Trump is dead," the 79-year-old president was photographed with his grandchildren, making a public appearance that aimed to put the speculation to rest. The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that while the president does have chronic venous insufficiency, his medical reports show he is fit for duty. White House physician Sean Barbarella backed this claim, issuing a memo that confirmed Trump is in "excellent condition," noting only "mild swelling in his lower legs." He explicitly dismissed any rumours of DVT.

Treatments and Precautions for CVI

CVI is a manageable condition, and medical experts suggest several therapies to treat it. These include simple lifestyle changes like elevating the legs and staying active. More active treatments include wearing compression stockings, which help improve blood flow. For more serious cases, medical procedures like ablation, phlebectomy (surgical removal of veins), or injections of a chemical called a sclerosant are used to treat the affected veins.
