Modi Visits China After 7 Years to Attend SCO Summit, Set to Meet Xi Amid Global Trade Tensions

PM Modi lands in China for the SCO Summit after 7 years. Crucial talks with Xi Jinping are expected amid global trade tensions and improving India-China ties.

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi landed in China on Saturday, marking his first visit in seven years, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit being held on August 31 and September 1.

This visit comes at a key moment as global trade tensions escalate, especially due to the tariff policies of US President Donald Trump, which have affected many major economies.

During this trip, PM Modi is expected to hold a crucial bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday. This meeting gains special importance as India and China continue efforts to rebuild trust following the border tensions in eastern Ladakh that flared up in 2020.

Resetting India-China Ties

Before leaving India, PM Modi said he is looking forward to meeting President Xi Jinping and emphasised India’s active role in SCO. He mentioned that under India’s presidency, new initiatives were launched in health, innovation, and culture.

“I am confident that my visits to Japan and China will help strengthen India’s interests, and support global peace and sustainable growth,” said Modi in his official departure statement.

Modi reached in China from Japan, completing the second leg of his two-nation tour.

In an interview with Japan’s The Yomiuri Shimbun, Modi said that stable and friendly relations between India and China can boost global peace and prosperity, especially when the world economy is facing uncertainties.

It is important for India and China to work together to bring stability to the global economic order,” he added.

Strategic Meetings on the Sidelines

Apart from President Xi, PM Modi is also scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and several other global leaders on the sidelines of the summit.

This visit also comes just weeks after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India, indicating signs of growing dialogue between the two Asian giants.

Since the violent Galwan clash in June 2020, both nations have taken steps to ease tensions. Notably, the disengagement process at the Demchok and Depsang friction points was completed under an agreement reached in October last year.

Looking Forward

This is PM Modi’s first visit to China since 2018, when he last attended the SCO Summit. President Xi’s last visit to India was in October 2019 for the second “informal summit.”

As the world watches, this renewed India-China engagement- backed by trade discussions and SCO cooperation - could signal a new chapter in bilateral and regional diplomacy.
