China’s Wang Yi Visits India for Border Talks, Signaling a Push to Normalize Relations

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has arrived in New Delhi for the first time since the 2020 deadly border clashes between India and China. His visit marks an important step toward normalizing ties between the two Asian neighbors amid ongoing border disputes and shifting global trade dynamics.
Wang Yi came to India ahead of the 24th round of boundary talks with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. On Monday, Wang held talks with Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, who acknowledged the challenging period the two countries have experienced. Jaishankar emphasized the need for a “candid and constructive approach,” stressing that differences should not turn into disputes or conflicts. The two ministers last met in Beijing during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting of foreign ministers.
Economic and trade issues formed a key part of the discussions, especially considering the strain in India-US relations following US President Donald Trump’s imposition of high tariffs on Indian exports. Both India and China see opportunities in cooperating economically, with China interested in accessing the Indian market and India needing critical Chinese components for electric vehicles and solar panel production.
In addition to trade, the talks also covered reopening border haats (markets), people-to-people contacts, tourism, pilgrimages, and the sharing of river data. Wang Yi's visit comes at a time when India’s relations with the US have cooled, creating momentum for India to restore ties with China despite ongoing boundary disagreements.
Experts note that while steps to normalize the relationship will be gradual due to unresolved border issues, both countries share a vision of a multipolar world and reforming current global institutions to ensure stability. Both sides are committed to promoting sustained peace along the border and expanding practical cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to meet Wang Yi today following the boundary talks, adding political weight to this diplomatic effort. This enhanced dialogue follows last year's BRICS summit in Kazan, where India and China agreed to resume communications and seek lasting peace in contested border areas.
The visit and talks symbolize a cautious but significant attempt by India and China to rebuild trust and work towards stable, cooperative relations despite remaining challenges.
