Sushila Karki Becomes Nepal's First Woman PM After Gen-Z Protests; India Pledges Full Support

In a historic political shift, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been sworn in as Nepal's first-ever woman Prime Minister. This change comes after massive anti-corruption protests, led by the nation's youth (Gen-Z), led to the collapse of the previous government. India, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has extended full support to the new interim government.

Kathmandu/New Delhi: In a landmark moment for Nepal, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took her oath as the interim Prime Minister yesterday. This historic development makes her the first woman to hold the country's top executive post and marks a new chapter in the Himalayan nation's politics, driven by a powerful youth-led movement.

The change in leadership comes after weeks of intense anti-corruption protests, spearheaded by Nepal's Gen-Z, which saw the ousting of the KP Sharma Oli government.

India was quick to welcome the new administration. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally congratulated Ms Karki in an online post. "I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of Nepal," he stated.

This sentiment was echoed by India's External Affairs Ministry. In a formal statement, the ministry said, "As a close neighbour, a fellow democracy and a long-term development partner, India will continue to work closely with Nepal for the well-being and prosperity of our two peoples and countries."

The Gen-Z Revolution

The path to this political shift was paved by unprecedented protests. For months, young Nepalis, deeply frustrated with corruption, took to the streets. The situation turned volatile last week when the Oli government imposed a ban on social media, a move seen as an attack on free speech. This clampdown backfired, leading to widespread unrest where government buildings and properties of political leaders were attacked.

As the Army stepped in to restore order and rescue Mr Oli, a new leader emerged from the chaos. Sushila Karki, known for her clean image and strong judicial background, became the unanimous choice of the Gen-Z protest leaders. In a truly 21st-century move, she was officially chosen through a public vote conducted on the popular online platform, Discord.

A New Hope for Nepal

Ms Karki is now seen as a beacon of hope, acceptable to both the traditional political parties and the young generation that brought her to power. Her immediate priorities are to restore peace and order across the nation.

The interim government's main mandate is to guide the country towards fresh elections. It has been announced that general elections will be held on March 5, 2026, where the people of Nepal will elect a new, permanent government. Until then, all eyes are on Prime Minister Karki to heal the nation's political divides and steer it towards a stable and prosperous future.
