NCERT Now in Charge of Class 10 & 12 Certificate Equivalence Across All Indian School Boards

The Government of India has officially designated NCERT, through its assessment body PARAKH, to determine the equivalence of Class 10 and 12 certificates from all recognized Indian school boards. This move ensures smooth board transfers, fair admissions, and equal opportunity in jobs - replacing the AIU with a more structured academic body.

Why This News Matters to Every Indian Student & Parent

In a historic education reform, the Government has empowered the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to officially recognize and equate Class 10th and 12th certificates from different school education boards in India.

This is a big step under the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), aiming to bring fairness, clarity, and mobility to India’s fragmented school education system.

  • Old system (2021 - 2025): AIU (Association of Indian Universities)

  • New system (From 6 Sept 2025): NCERT via PARAKH

What is PARAKH & Why Is It Important?

PARAKH stands for:

Performance Assessment, Review, and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development

It is a specialized national body under NCERT, created as per NEP 2020, with the aim to bring:

  • Academic fairness in assessments

  • Uniform learning standards

  • Scientific evaluation of school board equivalency

Through PARAKH, NCERT will evaluate and declare equivalence between the certificates issued by different Central, State, and Private Boards recognized under Indian law.

How This Change Benefits Students & Parents

1. Simplifies Inter-Board Migration

Switching boards (like from CBSE to ICSE, or State Board to CBSE) will now be easier with official, uniform equivalency.

2. Smoothens College Admissions & Entrance Exams

All Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across India will now accept equivalency granted by NCERT without extra scrutiny.

3. Equal Opportunity in Government Jobs

Class 10 & 12 certificates deemed equivalent by NCERT will be valid for all Central/State Government jobs.

4. Brings All Boards on a Level Playing Field

No board will be seen as ‘lesser’ or ‘non-equivalent’-giving fair access to all students.

Which School Boards Are Covered?

The notification applies to certificates issued by:

  • Central Government Boards (e.g., CBSE, NIOS)

  • State Government Boards (e.g., Maharashtra State Board, UP Board)

  • Private Boards set up by Acts or Recognised Institutions

Note: Only legally recognized boards are eligible.
