Trump Imposes 50% Tariff on Indian Goods
On the other side of the table, President Trump has taken a tougher stance. In a major move, the US imposed a total of 50% tariffs on all goods imported from India. This includes a new 25% import duty announced via executive order on 6 August 2025, which came into effect from 27 September.
Earlier, the US had already added a 25% tariff just a day before Trump’s initial 1 August deadline, building on the pre-existing 10% base duty on imports.
Russia Oil Ties Trigger the Tariffs
Trump defended his decision, accusing India of indirectly supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict by continuing to buy military equipment and crude oil from Moscow.
“India is the largest buyer of Russian oil and weapons. That’s not acceptable,” Trump posted on his social media handle.
India Stands Firm
Despite the mounting pressure, India has made it clear that it will not stop buying Russian oil, calling it a matter of national interest and energy security. New Delhi has maintained that its purchases are within legal frameworks and necessary for its growing economy.
What’s Next?
With both sides showing interest in continuing discussions, trade experts believe there’s still room for compromise. India and the US have a history of navigating complex trade and geopolitical challenges - and this may be no different.
