India's Scientists Create Foldable, Safe & Eco-Friendly Battery Using Aluminium

Indian scientists have developed a revolutionary aluminium-based battery that is foldable, safe to touch, and environment-friendly - a big step towards safer gadgets and sustainable tech.
India Unveils Foldable, Safe & Eco-Friendly Aluminium Battery - A Game-Changer for Future Tech
In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers in Bengaluru have developed a revolutionary battery that could change the way we use and design our gadgets. Unlike the commonly used lithium-ion batteries, which are known to overheat and even explode, this new battery is foldable, safe to touch, and environmentally friendly.
This innovation comes from a joint effort by the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS) and the Centre for Nano Science and Engineering (CeNSE) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The work is backed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
What Makes This Battery So Special?
- Made Using Aluminium: Instead of lithium, the battery uses aluminium, one of the most abundant and recyclable metals on Earth.
- Water-Based Electrolyte: It uses a water-based solution, making it safer and more sustainable.
- No Risk of Explosion: Unlike lithium-ion batteries, this battery is safe to touch and won’t catch fire or explode.
- Can Be Bent or Folded: The battery remains fully functional even when folded in half - a feature ideal for future flexible devices.
How It Works
The scientists created a special cathode (positive end) using a compound called Copper Hexacyanoferrate (CuHCFe) that holds aluminium ions. The anode (negative end) is made of Molybdenum Trioxide (MoO₃). Together, they form a powerful battery that works efficiently and lasts long.
Even after 150 charge-discharge cycles, the battery retains 96.77% of its capacity - meaning less wear and tear over time.
- Real-World Applications
- Flexible smartphones and tablets
- Wearable tech woven into clothes
- Safer electric vehicles
Environment-friendly power storage
To show off its flexibility, the team powered an LCD screen using the battery - even while bending it completely.
A Step Towards Greener Technology
This battery is not just about performance. It’s about safety, sustainability, and innovation. By using aluminium and water-based materials, the technology supports India’s goals for greener and safer energy solutions.
What Lies Ahead?
With more research and scaling, this aluminium battery technology could become a mainstream alternative to lithium-ion batteries, making our devices safer, cheaper, and eco-friendly.
India now stands at the forefront of next-generation battery innovation, and the world is watching.
