Tianjin, China – 31 August 2025: On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Xi Jinping of China, marking a pivotal moment in the evolving relationship between the two Asian giants.

The meeting comes after their last engagement in Kazan, October 2024, and builds on the steady positive trajectory seen since. Both leaders underscored that India and China are partners in development, not rivals, and stressed the need to prevent their differences from becoming disputes.

Border Peace & Stability Take Centre Stage

Prime Minister Modi reiterated that peace and tranquility in border areas are vital for sustained bilateral progress. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the successful disengagement in 2024 and reaffirmed their commitment to a mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue.

They appreciated the recent progress made by their Special Representatives and vowed continued political support to these efforts.

People-to-People Connectivity Gets a Boost

In a bid to strengthen cultural and social ties, both leaders acknowledged the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and discussed further steps including direct flights and easier visa access to promote tourism and human exchanges.

Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India and China’s relationship is rooted in strategic autonomy, and must not be influenced by third-country perspectives.

Collaboration on Global Challenges

The two leaders shared views on regional and global challenges, agreeing to strengthen cooperation on counter-terrorism, climate change, and fair trade practices within multilateral frameworks like the United Nations and WTO.

BRICS & SCO: Shared Leadership and Support
