India Commissions INS Nistar – Nation’s First Indigenous Deep Sea Diving Support Vessel



India takes a major stride in underwater defence with the commissioning of INS Nistar, the first Indian-made Diving Support Vessel, in Visakhapatnam. Built by Hindustan Shipyard Ltd., this advanced ship strengthens India’s deep-sea rescue capabilities and underlines the growing power of indigenous shipbuilding.



Guwahati,Assam, 18 July 2025 – The Indian Navy marked a historic moment today with the commissioning of INS Nistar, India’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV). The commissioning ceremony took place at Visakhapatnam, graced by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, who hailed it as a significant step towards a self-reliant India.

Built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited, INS Nistar is the first of two such vessels. Designed for deep-sea saturation diving and submarine rescue operations, it showcases India’s growing prowess in complex naval engineering.

“The commissioning of INS Nistar highlights India’s emergence as a regional maritime leader and reinforces our status as a ‘First Responder’ and ‘Preferred Security Partner’,” said Shri Sanjay Seth.

A Boost for Aatmanirbhar Bharat


He also applauded the Indian Navy and the shipbuilding industry for their role in promoting Aatmanirbhar Bharat, noting that all 57 new warships currently in the pipeline are being constructed in India.

Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, described INS Nistar as a “technological asset” and a vital “operational enabler”. He said the vessel would not only support Indian submarine operations but also extend critical rescue capabilities to friendly nations, strengthening India’s role as a Preferred Submarine Rescue Partner in the region.

About INS Nistar – A Technological Milestone

  • Deep-sea diving up to 300 metres

  • Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)

  • Self-Propelled Hyperbaric Life Boat (SPHLB)

  • Functions as a mother ship for deep submergence rescue vessels (DSRVs)

Indigenous Power


INS Nistar has over 80% indigenous content, with contributions from 120 MSMEs across India. It symbolises India's capability to design and construct technologically sophisticated ships that match global standards.

The commissioning ceremony was also attended by senior naval officials, members of the original erstwhile Nistar crew, and representatives from Hindustan Shipyard.
