Indian Railways Embraces AI: New Vision System to Revolutionise Train Safety

Indian Railways has taken a major leap into the future of train safety by partnering with DFCCIL to implement a cutting-edge Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS). This AI-powered technology will automatically detect defects in moving trains, significantly improving safety, reducing manual effort, and preventing potential accidents.
New Delhi, 10th July 2025 – In a pioneering move set to redefine the landscape of rail safety and efficiency, Indian Railways yesterday(10 july,2025) announced a significant collaboration with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been formally signed for the deployment of a state-of-the-art Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS), an initiative poised to usher in a new era of automated rolling stock maintenance.
This groundbreaking MVIS technology is a modern, AI/ML-based solution designed to be strategically deployed wayside along the tracks. As trains pass by, the system will diligently capture high-resolution images of their under-gear. More impressively, it will leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to automatically detect any anomalies, such as hanging, loose, or even missing components. Upon identifying such issues, the system will generate immediate, real-time alerts, enabling prompt intervention and proactive maintenance before potential problems escalate.
The historic MoU was officially inked at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, by Shri Sumit Kumar, Director (Project & Development), Railway Board, and Shri Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical), DFCCIL. The signing took place in the esteemed presence of Shri B. M. Agrawal, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Shri Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, along with other senior officials from both the Railway Board and DFCCIL, underscoring the importance of this collaborative venture.
Under the terms of this pivotal agreement, DFCCIL will undertake the crucial responsibilities of procurement, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of four MVIS units. This deployment marks a momentous first for Indian Railways, showcasing their commitment to embracing advanced technological solutions. The introduction of MVIS is expected to deliver a substantial boost to the overall safety of train operations, drastically reduce the need for intensive manual inspection efforts, and play a vital role in averting potential accidents and service disruptions.
This forward-thinking initiative perfectly aligns with Indian Railways' broader vision of integrating modern, intelligent systems into its vast railway ecosystem. The signing of this MoU is not merely a formality; it signifies a robust commitment to opening new avenues for digital transformation within rail safety, ultimately laying the foundation for a more resilient and future-ready rail infrastructure across the nation.
