Strengthening India's Coastal Shield: ICGS ATAL Launched by GSL

Goa Shipyard Limited has launched the sixth Fast Patrol Vessel - ICGS ATAL - designed to bolster India's maritime security and showcase Aatmanirbharta in defence shipbuilding.

India Launches ICGS ATAL to Boost Maritime Defence

In a proud display of India's indigenous defence capabilities, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) successfully launched the Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS ATAL on 29 July 2025. The vessel was unveiled at a ceremonial event in Vasco-da-Gama, Goa, attended by senior officials from the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Indian Navy, Ministry of Defence, and industry stakeholders.

This 52-metre-long vessel is the sixth in a series of eight FPVs being built by GSL for the Coast Guard. With an 8-metre beam and a displacement of 320 tonnes, ICGS ATAL is engineered for rapid response missions including coastal surveillance, island protection, offshore asset safety, anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search & rescue operations.

Aatmanirbharta in Action

Designed entirely in-house by GSL, the vessel stands as a testament to India's push towards self-reliance - or Aatmanirbharta - in shipbuilding and maritime defence. Despite global supply chain hurdles, GSL has delivered high-performance platforms that meet the demanding standards of modern naval operations.

GSL CMD Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay hailed the launch as “a reflection of the indomitable spirit of Team GSL and its unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence.” Chief Guest Shri Rozy Agarwal, PIFA at Coast Guard Headquarters, praised GSL’s execution strength and its critical contribution to strengthening national security.

Strategic Impact

These FPVs are vital in expanding India’s maritime domain awareness and quick-response capability along the vast coastline. With the upcoming launch of two additional vessels in the series, GSL remains committed to fortifying the nation's maritime front.
