Indian Army Enhances Night Combat Power with ₹659.47 Cr Deal for Indigenous Night Sights

- Indian Army signs ₹659.47 crore deal for modern Image Intensifier Night Sights
- Enables clear vision up to 500m at night, even under starlight conditions
- Over 51% components are Made-in-India under ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category
- Big opportunity for Indian MSMEs in defence electronics and optics
New Delhi, 15 October 2025: In a major move to strengthen India’s night warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a landmark ₹659.47 crore contract for the supply of Image Intensifier Night Sights for the Indian Army’s 7.62 x 51mm SIG 716 Assault Rifles.
This state-of-the-art night vision equipment will empower soldiers to engage targets up to 500 metres, even in low-light or starlit conditions, drastically improving their operational effectiveness during night operations and cross-border missions.
These sights represent a significant upgrade over the older generation Passive Night Sights (PNS), offering higher clarity, longer range, and advanced imaging, especially in pitch-dark terrains where visibility is a challenge.
Pushing Self-Reliance in Defence (Aatmanirbhar Bharat)
This procurement has been approved under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category, which stands for Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured. Over 51% of the content is made in India, in line with the government’s mission to promote Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence production.
This initiative directly supports local MSMEs, startups, and component manufacturers who are part of India’s growing defence ecosystem. It is expected to not only boost indigenous technology but also create high-skilled jobs and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers.
Why It Matters
- Enhanced Security: Improves surveillance and engagement in sensitive border zones
- Soldier Advantage: Provides better night combat readiness with minimal visibility
- Economic Growth: Strengthens Indian defence manufacturing & supports MSMEs
- Strategic Independence: Reduces reliance on imported tech and fosters innovation
Visual Impact:
“These Night Sights allow our soldiers to dominate the darkness. It’s not just about technology - it’s about trust in our indigenous capability.” - Defence Official
