UPSC Tests AI Facial Recognition for Faster Candidate Verification in NDA & CDS Exams

UPSC successfully tested AI-based facial authentication during NDA & CDS exams to speed up candidate verification and boost exam security.

UPSC Goes High-Tech: AI Facial Recognition Tested in NDA & CDS Exams

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has taken a big step towards smarter and safer exams. On 14th September 2025, UPSC ran a pilot programme using AI-powered facial authentication to verify candidates during the NDA & NA II and CDS II examinations.

This new system was tested at select centres in Gurugram, in partnership with the National e-Governance Division (NeGD). It matched candidates’ live facial images with the photos they submitted during registration. The result? Verification time dropped to just 8–10 seconds per candidate, making entry faster and more secure.

In total, 2,700 successful scans were completed for 1,129 candidates across different sessions. This trial shows how technology can help reduce impersonation and cheating, while making the exam process smoother for everyone.

Dr. Ajay Kumar, Chairman of UPSC, said:

“We are committed to using cutting-edge technology to ensure fairness and transparency. This pilot is a major step towards modernising our exam process while protecting its integrity.”

If successful, this AI system could be used in all future UPSC exams, making the process more efficient and trustworthy.
