In a move that brings relief to thousands of students and parents across the country, the Ministry of Education has announced an extension for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) application deadline for the year 2025-26. The new last date to submit applications on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) is now 30th September 2025.
This extension provides a valuable opportunity for eligible students who haven't yet completed their application process. The portal has been open for submissions since 2nd June 2025.
What is the NMMSS Scholarship?
The NMMSS is a wonderful initiative by the Department of School Education & Literacy. Its main goal is to help talented students from economically weaker sections of society continue their education without financial stress. The scheme aims to reduce the number of students who drop out after Class VIII and encourages them to complete their schooling up to Class XII.
Every year, one lakh fresh scholarships are awarded to deserving Class IX students who pass the selection test conducted by their respective State/UT governments.
Who is Eligible for This Scholarship?
To apply for the NMMSS, students must meet the following criteria:
- School: You must be studying in a State Government, Government-aided, or local body school.
- Parental Income: Your total family income from all sources should not be more than ₹3.50 lakh per year.
- Class VII Marks: You must have scored a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade) in your Class VII examination. There is a 5% relaxation for SC/ST students, meaning they need 50% marks.
- Selection Test: You must have cleared the selection test for the scholarship conducted by your State/UT.
Scholarship Amount and Benefits
Selected students receive a scholarship amount of ₹12,000 per year. This financial assistance is provided from Class IX and can be renewed every year up to Class XII, provided the student meets the academic performance criteria for renewal.
The money is sent directly to the student's bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring a transparent and quick process.
How to Apply on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP)?
Applying for the NMMSS is done online through the NSP, which is a single platform for many government scholarships. Here are the basic steps:
