Bridging Decades: PM Modi's Historic Argentina Visit Signals New Era for India-Argentina Ties

Buenos Aires, Argentina – In a significant diplomatic stride, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visit to Argentina has heralded a new chapter in the enduring relationship between India and the South American nation. This landmark trip, the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years, coincides with the momentous occasion of both countries celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties.

Upon his arrival in Buenos Aires, Prime Minister Modi was greeted with a ceremonial welcome, underscoring the importance of this engagement. He was then warmly received by President H.E. Javier Milei at Casa Rosada for extensive discussions.

The leaders delved into the full spectrum of bilateral relations during both restricted and delegation-level meetings. A keen focus was placed on bolstering cooperation across a diverse range of sectors, including critical minerals, oil & gas, defence, and nuclear energy. The discussions also highlighted promising areas like agriculture, particularly the innovative use of drones, fisheries, monitoring of power transmission lines, and the ever-expanding world of ICT.

Digital Public Infrastructure, notably India's pioneering UPI system, was a key talking point, alongside potential collaborations in space technology, railways, and pharmaceuticals. The leaders also acknowledged the vibrant potential in sports and people-to-people exchanges, recognising the cultural bridges that can be built.

While reviewing the ongoing economic collaboration, Prime Minister Modi observed the stable trajectory of bilateral trade. However, both leaders concurred on the pressing need to diversify their trade basket to fully unlock the immense potential of commercial engagement. In this regard, the expansion of the India-MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement was a significant topic of discussion, indicating a shared vision for deeper economic integration.

In a powerful display of solidarity, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to President Milei for Argentina's strong condemnation of the barbaric terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Both leaders unequivocally agreed that terrorism poses a grave threat to humanity and reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to strengthening the global fight against this menace.

Looking to the future, the leaders pledged to continue working closely to fortify their strategic partnership, emphasising a shared resolve to amplify the voices and concerns of the Global South on the international stage.

Before concluding his impactful visit, Prime Minister Modi paid poignant floral tributes at the busts of Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore in Buenos Aires, honouring the deep cultural and philosophical ties between the two nations.

President Milei warmly thanked Prime Minister Modi for his historic visit to Argentina, and in a gesture of strengthening future engagement, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Milei to visit India at a mutually convenient time. This visit undoubtedly lays the groundwork for a robust and dynamic partnership for years to come.(source-pib)
