The voyage was flagged off on September 8, 2025, from Guijan ghat in Tinsukia with a vibrant celebration filled with musical performances, cultural events, and tributes. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's songs have long echoed the struggles and dreams of the people living along the Brahmaputra River. This river journey serves as a living tribute to his enduring legacy, introducing his timeless music to a new generation.
A Tribute to the Bard of the Brahmaputra
In a video message, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, remembered Dr. Hazarika as a cultural icon whose songs of unity, humanity, and patriotism resonate with people even today. He mentioned, “His voice captured the eternal spirit of the nation, and this musical voyage will bring his vision and voice alive once more along the river that inspired much of his work.”
The inaugural event was marked by performances from renowned artists such as Padma Dulal Manki, Dharmendra Baruah, and Kajal Dev. Dignitaries from across Assam were also present, including Ponakan Baruah, MLA of Chabua, and Pulak Gohain, Chairman of the Assam State Housing Board.
Later, the voyage reached Bogibeel Ghat in Dibrugarh, where a grand cultural program was held. The evening featured performances from local communities, including Moran, Motok, Sonowal Kachari, Tea Tribes, and more. Nilakshi Neog, a prominent singer, mesmerized the crowd with her renditions of Dr. Hazarika’s iconic songs.
A River Journey of Cultural Unity
The “Bistirna Parore” voyage is more than just a musical journey; it is an effort to unite communities and honor the rich cultural heritage of Assam. The program will continue with events scheduled at Silghat (Tezpur) on September 11, Pandu (Guwahati) on September 15, and Jogighopa (date to be updated). The IWAI’s initiative aims to keep Dr. Hazarika’s memory alive and promote social unity through his timeless songs that reflect the diversity of the region.
