Guwahati,Assam,India – 3 August 2025,Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff to US President Donald Trump, has accused India of imposing “massive” tariffs on American goods and “cheating” the US immigration system. He also claimed India is buying almost as much Russian oil as China, according to a Bloomberg report.
Speaking to reporters, Miller said, “President Trump has always wanted a strong relationship with India and Prime Minister Modi. But we need to face the reality of how this war is being funded.”
He further added, “All diplomatic, financial and other options are on the table to bring peace in Ukraine.”
Despite strong US pressure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has not stopped crude oil purchases from Russia. Sources revealed that Indian oil refiners – both public and private – have not received any instructions to reduce or stop these imports. Crude buying remains a commercial decision.
Meanwhile, Miller's comments come even as Trump-era tariffs of up to 25% remain in effect on Indian goods, with threats of more trade action if Russian oil imports continue.
In an address on 2 August, PM Modi said, “The world is facing uncertainty. Whatever we buy must be judged by one rule – it should be made with Indian sweat.”
India’s historical ties with Russia were reinforced on 1 August, when Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called the partnership “steady and time-tested.”
He added, “India’s relations with any country should not be seen through the lens of a third country. Our ties with the US will continue to grow.”
As India and the US work through ongoing trade negotiations, this latest criticism may further test the fragile balance of diplomacy, trade, and global geopolitics.
