Indian Post Service to USA Suspended: What You Need to Know

The Department of Posts (India Post) has temporarily suspended most postal services to the USA starting August 25, 2025. This move comes after a new US executive order eliminated the duty-free exemption for goods valued up to $800, creating confusion for air carriers and customs. While letters, documents, and gift items under $100 will still be accepted, customers who have already sent other items can seek a refund.
Big Change for India-US Postal Shipments
Got family or friends in the USA? Or are you a small business owner who ships products to America?
Here's an important update from the Department of Posts that could impact you. As of August 25, 2025, most postal articles from India to the USA will be temporarily suspended. This is a direct response to a new regulation in the United States, which changes how they handle incoming international mail.
The US administration has issued a new rule (Executive Order No. 14324) that effectively scraps the "de minimis" exemption. Previously, you could send items worth up to $800 without any customs duties. But from August 29, 2025, all goods, regardless of their value, will be subject to duties under a new tariff framework.
Why the Sudden Suspension?
While the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued some initial guidelines, the full picture is still a bit hazy. The new rules require shipping carriers to collect and remit these duties, but the processes for doing so are still not clearly defined.
Due to this lack of clarity and technical readiness, the air carriers responsible for flying postal consignments have said they can't accept packages after August 25. India Post, acting responsibly, has decided to hit the pause button on most services to avoid any major issues for customers.
What Can You Still Send?
Don't worry, not all services are on hold. You can still send:
- Letters and documents: Regular correspondence remains unaffected.
- Gift items: As long as the value is up to $100 USD, you can still send gifts to your loved ones without any duty concerns.
For all other types of parcels and articles, the booking is temporarily suspended. India Post is actively working with all stakeholders to sort out the situation and hopes to restore full services as soon as possible.
If you have already booked a package that falls under the suspended categories, you can apply for a refund. The Department of Posts has expressed its deep regret for the inconvenience caused and is making every effort to resolve this as quickly as possible.
