Modi Champions Global South at BRICS: A New Dawn for Multilateralism?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the BRICS Summit in Brazil, laid out a forward-thinking vision for reforming global institutions and empowering the Global South. His four-pronged approach focuses on strengthening BRICS' credibility, addressing the specific needs of developing nations, securing global supply chains, and leveraging AI for universal benefit. This address, part of a crucial five-nation diplomatic tour, underscores India's growing influence and commitment to a more equitable world order.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took centre stage at the BRICS Summit in Brazil on Sunday(6th July,2025), delivering a powerful address that could well signal a new era for multilateral cooperation and the rising voice of the Global South. Amidst increasing global uncertainties, PM Modi's clear-cut roadmap for the BRICS bloc resonated deeply, emphasising reform, resilience, and responsible innovation.

The summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence," served as a pivotal platform for PM Modi's ongoing five-nation diplomatic outreach. Having already visited Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Argentina, his presence in Brazil for the BRICS deliberations, with Namibia as his final stop, highlights India's deepening commitment to fostering strong ties with developing nations and playing a strategic role in international forums.

"I focused on how to make the BRICS platform even more effective in this increasingly multipolar world," the Prime Minister stated, outlining four key proposals designed to enhance BRICS' impact and relevance.

Reforming for Credibility and Smarter Finance

First on PM Modi's agenda was the urgent need for internal reforms within BRICS nations themselves. He stressed that by improving their own systems, BRICS members could significantly boost their credibility when advocating for broader multilateral reforms.

He particularly highlighted the progress made by the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), urging for a more astute approach to financing. "While sanctioning projects through the BRICS NDB, there must be a focus on demand-driven decision-making, long-term financial sustainability, and maintaining a healthy credit rating," he advised, pushing for financial prudence and strategic investment.

Fulfilling Global South Aspirations

The Prime Minister then underscored the critical role BRICS must play in meeting the "specific expectations and aspirations that nations of the Global South can have from BRICS." He stressed that developing nations look to the bloc as a champion for fairness and opportunity on the global stage.

India, he noted, is already leading by example. He cited the successful launch of the BRICS Agricultural Research Platform, a collaborative initiative facilitating knowledge exchange in vital areas like agri-biotech, climate adaptation, and precision farming. Furthering this, he proposed the creation of a "BRICS Science and Research Repository" – a move that would undoubtedly benefit the Global South by fostering shared knowledge and technological advancement.

Securing Supply Chains and Ethical AI

Turning to economic resilience, PM Modi called for a unified front to safeguard crucial global supply chains. He cautioned against any single nation monopolising or weaponising these vital resources, stressing the need for collective security and resilience.

In a forward-looking statement on technology, PM Modi championed Artificial Intelligence as a tool for collective human progress. "We in India believe in AI as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities. Guided by the mantra of ‘AI for All’, India is actively using AI in many sectors," he affirmed. He also emphasised a balanced approach to AI governance, prioritising both innovation and addressing potential concerns.

Concluding his impactful address, PM Modi reminded the assembled leaders of the profound responsibility they carry. "The Global South has many expectations from us. To fulfill them, we must follow the principle of ‘Lead by Example.’ India is fully committed to working shoulder to shoulder with all partners to achieve our shared goals," he declared, solidifying India's position as a dedicated partner and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable world.(source-Znews)
