With Lord Mahadev on one side and the vast ocean on the other, the Prime Minister said the confluence of nature, devotion, Vedic chants, and thousands of devotees had transformed Somnath into a living celebration of India’s civilisation.
“I consider it my great fortune that I am serving Somnath not only as Prime Minister but also as Chairman of the Somnath Temple Trust,” he said.
A Festival of Faith, Courage and Culture
PM Modi highlighted the grandeur of the celebrations held from 8 to 11 January 2026, including:
- 72 hours of uninterrupted Om chanting
- 72 hours of continuous Vedic mantra recitation

Reflecting on history, the Prime Minister said that exactly 1,000 years ago in 1026 AD, invaders believed they had erased Somnath forever.
“But today, even after a millennium, the dharma-dhwaja atop Somnath proclaims the strength of Hindustan,” he said.
PM Modi traced the repeated attacks on Somnath-from Mahmud of Ghazni to Alauddin Khilji, Muzaffar Shah, Mahmud Begada, and Aurangzeb-and emphasised that every destruction was followed by reconstruction.
“The history of Somnath is not of defeat and despair, but of victory and rebirth,” he asserted.
Remembering India’s Forgotten Heroes
The Prime Minister paid homage to the countless men and women who sacrificed their lives to protect Somnath, saying every grain of soil in Prabhas Patan bears witness to their bravery.

Reciting sacred shlokas, PM Modi said Somnath represents Mrityunjay Mahadev-the conqueror of death and embodiment of time.
“Those who tried to destroy Somnath were reduced to pages in history. Somnath still stands tall by the ocean,” he said.
He added that Shiva exists in every particle of the universe, making faith indestructible.
