Big Navratri Gift! PM Modi Announces New GST Reforms, Kicking Off a Nationwide 'Bachat Utsav'

This Navratri brings a massive festive gift from the government! Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a major overhaul of the GST system, kicking off a nationwide 'GST Bachat Utsav' (Savings Festival) from September 22nd. With new, simpler tax slabs, most everyday items, from groceries to cars, are set to become cheaper, promising significant savings for every Indian household and a big boost for small businesses.

In a major festive announcement, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today unveiled 'Next Generation GST Reforms', heralding a nationwide "GST Bachat Utsav" or Savings Festival, starting at sunrise on September 22, 2025. Addressing the nation on the auspicious first day of Navratri, the Prime Minister declared that these reforms are a significant step towards a self-reliant India ('Aatmanirbhar Bharat') and are designed to put more money back into the pockets of the common man.

This festival of savings, he emphasized, will touch the lives of everyone - from the poor and the middle class to farmers, women, and small entrepreneurs - making this festive season truly happier and sweeter for crores of families.

What's Getting Cheaper? The New GST Slabs Explained

The highlight of the reform is a much simpler tax structure. Say goodbye to the confusing web of multiple rates! The new system will primarily operate with just two main slabs: 5% and 18%.

What does this mean for your monthly budget?

  • Massive Price Drops: A whopping 99% of items that were previously in the 12% tax bracket have now been moved to the lower 5% slab.

  • Everyday Essentials: Items of daily use like essential food items, medicines, soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes will now either be tax-free or attract only 5% GST.

  • Fulfilling Your Dreams: Planning to buy a new scooter, bike, or car? Or perhaps a new TV or refrigerator for your home? These big-ticket items are also set to become more affordable.

  • Travel and Lifestyle: Even your vacation plans will cost less, as GST on most hotel rooms has been slashed. Health and life insurance will also be cheaper.

The Prime Minister proudly stated that these changes, combined with the recent income tax relief, will result in savings of over ₹2.5 lakh crore for the people of India.

A Double Bonanza for the Middle Class

PM Modi highlighted the rise of a 'neo-middle class' in India, with 25 crore people moving out of poverty in the last eleven years. For this aspirational class, the government is delivering a "double bonanza".

First, the income tax relief announced earlier this year made income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free. Now, the reduction in GST will further increase their purchasing power, making it easier for them to build a home, buy a vehicle, and improve their quality of life.

Boosting 'Made in India' and Small Businesses

These reforms are a cornerstone of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission. The Prime Minister stressed that the simplified GST procedures and lower tax burden will provide a massive boost to India's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cottage industries.

He said, "Reduced GST will increase their sales and reduce their tax burden, resulting in a double advantage." Recalling India's historical excellence in manufacturing, he urged small industries to focus on world-class quality, ensuring that every 'Made in India' product becomes a symbol of global prestige.

A Renewed Call for 'Swadeshi'

Reigniting the spirit of the freedom struggle, PM Modi made a heartfelt appeal for 'Swadeshi'. He urged citizens to consciously choose Indian products over foreign ones. "Buy products that are Made in India, infused with the hard work and sweat of the country's youth," he said. He envisioned every household becoming a symbol of Swadeshi, with every shop proudly selling indigenous goods. This collective effort, he affirmed, is crucial to fulfilling the dream of a developed and self-reliant India.
