Indian Navy's Anti-Submarine Firepower Gets a Major Boost with New Indigenous Rocket


The Indian Navy is set to significantly enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities with the successful user trials of the indigenously developed Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ERASR). This cutting-edge weapon, designed by DRDO, promises to be a game-changer in safeguarding India's maritime interests.


A New Era for Indian Naval Defence: ERASR Trials Conclude Successfully


Great news for India's maritime security! The Indian Navy has just wrapped up highly successful user trials for a brand-new, entirely home-grown weapon system – the Extended Range Anti-Submarine Rocket (ERASR). These crucial trials, conducted aboard INS Kavaratti between June 23rd and July 7th, 2025, mark a significant leap forward in India's ability to combat underwater threats.

This innovative anti-submarine rocket is a proud achievement of India's defence research and development. The Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) in Pune, a facility of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), led the design and development, working closely with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory and the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory. The ERASR is specifically designed to be fired from the Indigenous Rocket Launcher (IRL) on Indian Naval Ships, ensuring seamless integration with existing platforms.

What makes the ERASR stand out? It boasts a clever twin-rocket motor configuration, allowing it to cover a wide range of distances with impressive accuracy and consistent performance. Even the Electronic Time Fuze, a critical component, is indigenously developed. This level of self-reliance is a testament to India's growing capabilities in advanced defence technology.

During the trials, a total of 17 ERASRs were put through their paces at various ranges. The results were resounding: all objectives, including range performance, the flawless functioning of the Electronic Time Fuze, and effective warhead operation, were successfully demonstrated. This rigorous testing ensures the system is ready for the demands of real-world naval operations.

With the successful completion of these user trials, the Indian Navy is now poised to induct the ERASR system into its fleet very soon. This will undoubtedly provide a substantial boost to its anti-submarine warfare capabilities, further securing India's vast coastline and strategic maritime interests.

The production of these vital rockets will be handled by Bharat Dynamics Limited in Hyderabad and Solar Defence & Aerospace Limited in Nagpur, further strengthening India's defence industrial base.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh, India's Defence Minister, was quick to congratulate DRDO, the Indian Navy, and all the industry partners involved in this monumental achievement. He emphasised that the induction of the ERASR system will significantly enhance the Navy's "striking power." Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, also commended the dedicated teams behind the design and development of the ERASR, acknowledging their hard work and innovation.

This successful trial and impending induction of the ERASR is a clear signal of India's commitment to building a strong, self-reliant defence sector capable of protecting its national interests in an increasingly complex global environment.(source-pib)
