India-Ghana Friendship: A Comprehensive Partnership for Global Progress

In a historic address to the Ghanaian Parliament, the Indian Prime Minister underscored the enduring bond between India and Ghana, elevating their ties to a comprehensive partnership. Emphasising shared democratic values, a commitment to Global South empowerment, and collaborative development, the speech highlighted India's rapid growth as a catalyst for global stability and prosperity.

Guwahati,Assam – On 3rd July 2025-In a landmark address to the Parliament of Ghana, the Right Honourable Speaker, Leadership of the House, and distinguished members,Indian PM Shri Narendra Modi articulated a powerful vision for an elevated partnership between India and Ghana. Heralding Ghana as a "land that radiates the spirit of democracy, dignity, and resilience," the Prime Minister extended the goodwill of 1.4 billion Indians, emphasising the profound connection between the world's largest democracy and a beacon of inspiration on the African continent.

The visit marked a significant moment, with the Prime Minister receiving Ghana's national award from President Mahama, an honour dedicated to the "enduring friendship and shared values that bind India and Ghana." Earlier in the day, tribute was paid to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, whose words, "The forces that unite us are intrinsic and greater than the super-imposed influences that keep us apart," continue to guide the shared journey of both nations.

Democracy's Enduring Roots and Global Vision

Highlighting India as the "mother of Democracy," the Prime Minister stressed that for India, democracy is not merely a system but a fundamental value, with historical roots tracing back thousands of years. The Rig Veda's call for "good thoughts to come to us from all directions" encapsulates India's democratic ethos of openness and inclusivity, exemplified by its over 2,500 political parties, 20 state governments, and 22 official languages. This inherent openness, the Prime Minister noted, enables Indians to integrate seamlessly wherever they go, much like "sugar in tea" in Ghana.

Both India and Ghana, having endured colonial rule, draw strength from their rich heritage and pride in their social, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Their relationship, described as "sweeter than your famous ‘Sugarloaf’ pineapple," has now been elevated to a comprehensive partnership with President Mahama.

The address also touched upon the rapidly changing world order, with technological revolutions, the rise of the Global South, and shifting demographics demanding credible reforms in global governance. The Prime Minister asserted that "progress cannot come without giving voice to the Global South," a principle that guided India's G20 Presidency. India's efforts led to the African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20, a source of immense pride.

Humanity First: India's Approach to Global Challenges

Emphasising India's philosophy of "Humanity First," the Prime Minister reiterated the nation's commitment to global well-being. This was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when India shared vaccines and medicines with over 150 countries, including Ghana. Initiatives like Mission LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment), One World, One Sun, One Grid, International Solar Alliance, and the Global Biofuels Alliance, all powered by an inclusive spirit, demonstrate India's proactive approach to global challenges. Ghana's role as a founding member and host of the African Regional Meeting for the International Solar Alliance in September further solidifies this shared vision.

India's Growth Story: A Pillar of Global Stability

Over the past decade, India has undergone a significant transformation, with its people reposing faith in peace, security, and development, leading to the re-election of the same government for a third consecutive term – a feat not seen in over six decades. India stands as the fastest-growing emerging economy and is poised to become the third-largest economy globally, contributing nearly 16% to global growth. With the world's third-largest start-up ecosystem, India is a hub of innovation and technology, and proudly stands as the "Pharmacy of the world." Indian women are breaking barriers in science, space, aviation, and sports, exemplified by India's successful Moon landing and an Indian astronaut currently in orbit.

The Prime Minister drew a poignant connection between India's space milestones and his visits to Africa, noting that he was in Africa during Chandrayaan's lunar landing and is once again in Africa as an Indian astronaut conducts experiments in space. This, he stated, "is no ordinary coincidence. It reflects the deep bond we share, our common aspirations, and our shared future."

India's development model is inclusive, aiming to make India a Developed Nation by 2047, coinciding with 100 years of independence. The Prime Minister assured Ghana that India will walk "shoulder to shoulder" on its path to progress and prosperity. In times of global uncertainty, India's democratic stability is a "ray of hope," and its rapid progress a "catalyst for global growth." A strong India, he concluded, contributes to a more stable and prosperous world, guided by the mantra: "Together, for everyone’s growth with everyone’s trust and effort."

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Future Collaborations

India remains a committed partner in Africa's development journey, supporting Agenda 2063 with an approach of "growing together as equals." India's demand-driven development partnership focuses on building local capacities and creating local opportunities, empowering self-sustaining ecosystems.

This commitment has been demonstrated through various initiatives, including the India-Africa Summit in 2015, the hosting of the African Development Bank meeting in 2017, and the expansion of India's diplomatic presence to 46 countries across Africa. Over 200 projects continent-wide enhance connectivity, infrastructure, and industrial capacity, with annual India-Africa Business conclaves fostering new opportunities.

In Ghana, the inauguration of the Tema – Mpakadan rail line last year stands as the largest infrastructure project in the region, reflecting India's dedication. With Ghana's potential to become an IT and innovation hub, the future promises further collaboration and progress.

Emphasising the importance of free and fair elections, the Prime Minister expressed confidence in India's Election Commission to share its expertise with Ghana's Electoral Commission. Parliamentary exchanges remain a cornerstone of the relationship, with the Prime Minister recalling the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Meeting in Accra in 2023, which saw the largest Indian Parliamentary delegation to Ghana. The establishment of the Ghana-India Parliamentary Friendship Society was welcomed, and an invitation extended to visit India's new Parliament, where one-third of seats are now reserved for women – a testament to India's bold democratic steps.

Concluding his address, Prime Minister,Shri Narendra Modi reiterated the shared dream of India and Ghana: a world where every child has opportunities, every voice is heard, and nations rise together. Quoting Dr. Nkrumah once more, "I am not African because I was born in Africa. But because Africa was born in me," Modi affirmed that "India carries Africa in its heart," pledging to build a partnership for generations to come.(source-pmo)
